The Balancing Castles IV
Meteora, Northern Greece.
There was a time (late 16th century) were Meteora included a total number of 24 big monasteries. Most of the small hermitages caves, had almost been abandoned, since the new idea for the formation of larger monastic brotherhoods prevailed. When I stood & observe the details of this landscape, I was enchanted by this strange formation of immense monolithic pillars & hills (some as high as 550m/1800ft above the plain) like giant rounded boulders which dominate the local area. The whole meaning of the word Meteora (derives from the ancient Greek word \"meteoros\" meaning suspended in the air or in the heavens above) makes total sense. Meteora is one of those places where natural & artificial elements come together in perfect harmony to create a natural work of art on a monumental, yet human scale. Within this landscape of awe-inspiring shapes, volumes & textures, one has that rare sensation of feeling both small & large at the same time in the presence of these outstanding natural works of art.
